I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Theft - (shoplifting, personal, other), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. We carried out an operation with the Live Facial Recognition (LFR) van in Basingstoke yesterday (6 August), and we wanted to update you on the results.
The vans were deployed to London Street and Wote Street. While the technology was being set up, a 60-year-old man wanted in connection with a theft investigation was identified by an officer.
Barry Thomas, 60, of Winchester Road, Basingstoke, has since been charged with theft from the person of another following a report that meat worth £280 had been stolen from M&S in Festival Place on 20 July.
He appeared at Basingstoke Magistrates Court yesterday where he was fined and ordered to pay compensation.
Later in the day, a 32-year-old man from Basingstoke was identified by the technology as part of an ongoing stalking investigation. He will be voluntary interviewed later, if required, as our enquiries remain ongoing.
And a 17-year-old boy was also identified by an officer as part of an investigation into driving and failing to stop for police offences in Basingstoke. He will be voluntary interviewed at a later date.
It was great to be able to use the vans to help support our teams to target offenders in Basingstoke.
Yesterday was another successful operation which once again received a positive response from the local community. The support of the courts meant we were able to get a swift resolution to an ongoing investigation.
Using the latest technology boosts our ability to tackle the crime that matters most to our communities and stop those who think they can get away with it.
Our officers will continue to be a visible presence in the town centre and do everything they can to help tackle persistent offenders in the district.
